About This Vertical Life

This Vertical Life blog exists to educate and inspire Christians to live their lives set on things above. A "vertical life" is one focused on Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, for the glory of God.

A "vertical life" is developed by understanding the Bible in its original context and then living the message in the world today. This blog is a tool to help.

My name is John, and I created this blog. My parents introduced me to Christ at an early age and demonstrated a love for God and His Word. With this foundation, I have been a student of Scripture, both formally and informally, for nearly 40 years.

I have been a Bible educator for over 25 years in the Church and the University. This has given me the pleasure of teaching students at various ages and stages of life including middle school, high school, college students, graduate students, and senior adults.

I love God and the Bible. I want to help others understand and apply the Bible to every area of life and watch the difference God can make.

Faith Essentials

The Bible

I believe the Bible is the inspired, authoritative Word of God.

I believe there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I believe in the deity Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, substitutionary death, bodily resurrection, ascension, and personal return in power and glory.

I believe salvation is by grace through faith.

The Holy Spirit

I believe in the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin, regenerates, sanctifies, and empowers all who believe in Jesus Christ.

The Church

I believe in the universal Church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. I believe in the local Church, consisting of believers associated for worship, service, outreach, and fellowship.

Last Things
I believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe in the resurrection of the body, and the reward of the righteous, and the punishment of the wicked.
